Physician Referral

Concierge medicine compared to Concierge psychology

Concierge medicine goes with several names, such as retainer medicine, cash-only practice, direct care, or member medicine. And it’s nothing complicated. These are just some names that refer to a personal relationship between a doctor and their patients.

Here, a doctor offers additional or personal care to a patient at an extra fee, usually made annually. This helps you, as the patient, to receive more attention from your doctor.

However, you should note that different medical concierge practices vary in terms of service offered, structure, and fees. For this reason, you should choose one that covers your needs and budget.

Statistics show that between 800 and 5,000 U.S. doctors practice concierge medicine. This is an indication that the practice is gaining popularity day after day.

Concierge Psychology is a service offered by Dr. Steven Chen for several mental/behavioral health conditions. This model includes a package (set number of sessions) for a set fee. Each area (mental/behavioral health condition) is different depending on the severity and chronicity of the individual. The following are examples:

  1. Addiction
    1. Alcohol abuse or dependence – 3, 6 or 12 month treatment. Typically multiple visits per week.
    2. Substance abuse or dependence – 3, 6 or 12 month treatment. Typically multiple visits per week.
    3. Sex or pornography addiction – 3, 6 or 12 month treatment. Typically multiple visits per week.
  2. Anxiety Disorders
    1. Panic Disorder – typically 8 to 12 week treatment protocol
    2. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – typically 8 to 12 week treatment protocol.
    3. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – typically 8 to 12 week treatment protocol.
  3. Career development or Career change: typically 6 month coaching.
  4. Marital/couples therapy: 3, 6 or 12 month treatment.
  5. Other situations to be determined.

The typical process is for an individual to receive a referral or self-refer and inquire about setting up an intake appointment. The intake appointment will assess the individual’s mental/behavioral health and the severity of the condition. After the intake appointment, the psychologist will discuss the treatment options and make a recommendation.
